TV NewsCheck: El Rey Network Names New Head Of Programming

El Rey Network has appointed veteran media industry executive Mauricio Rios vice president, programming and acquisitions. His background is in programming content for U.S. Hispanics and young viewers, with experience in engaging these core audiences through digital and streaming platforms, Rios will also leverage his extensive relationships to help El Rey expand the brand across new platforms, the company said.

Rios comes to El Rey after two decades of network experience in content acquisitions and audience strategy. He recently spent three years as director of programming and scheduling for Universo Channel, an entertainment and sports cable channel for U.S. Hispanics, part of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises.

From 2014 to 18 he was responsible for the acquisition of key programming for the rebranded channel and executing its short- and long-term program planning and scheduling strategy.

Prior to this, Rios was director of joint venture channel operations at Comcast/NBCUniversal International, where he provided oversight and guidance for programming, marketing, online, on-air, and operational requirements of international joint venture channels in Latin America, South Korea, Israel and Canada.

He previously spent 11 years at Fox Latin American Channels, where he led the acquisitions and programming strategy for a portfolio of channels, including Canal Fox, FX, Fox Life, National Geographic and Speed Channel.

A native of Colombia who emigrated to the U.S. at age 12, Rios holds an MBA in international business and received his bachelor’s degree in film from California State University, Northridge.
