Salinas, the longest-tenured woman serving as a network evening news anchor in American television history, shared her plans with viewers today at the end of the evening newscast
NEW YORK – AUGUST 3, 2017 – María Elena Salinas, an influential voice in television and Hispanic America for more than three decades, announced today that she plans to leave the Univision News anchor chair at the end of the year.
Salinas, the daughter of Mexican immigrants, went on to host Univision Network’s national evening newscast and report momentous stories for generations of Hispanic Americans over a long and distinguished career. Her departure from Univision after more than 35 years will end an era that has left an indelible mark on American television and Hispanics in the United States, for whom listening to her poised, informed and empathetic voice has long been a nightly ritual. Salinas, winner of top journalism honors and dubbed the “Voice of Hispanic America” by The New York Times, also co-hosts the Sunday show “Aquí y Ahora” (Here and Now) and presents several in-depth specials on current issues each year. Starting next January, she plans to begin her next chapter, working independently as a journalist and producer, and continuing to devote herself to philanthropy.

In the coming months, Univision will announce plans for the new anchor who will join Jorge Ramos on its flagship newscast, which regularly reaches two million viewers, and plans for the co-host who will join Teresa Rodriguez on our weekly newsmagazine show “Aquí y Ahora.”
Salinas was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters 2017 Hall of Fame and will be inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame on October 17, 2017. Among the many awards she has received throughout her career are seven Emmy awards, along with the Broadcast Legend Award from the Radio and Television News Association of Southern California and the Mickey Leland Humanitarian Award. She was the first Latina to receive a Lifetime Achievement Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Salinas was also honored by Broadcasting & Cable/Multichannel News with the Outstanding Achievement Award in Hispanic Television and was part of a Univision News team that received an Edward R. Murrow Award. She has received honorary doctoral degrees from American University and California State University, Fullerton.
Salinas was born and raised in Los Angeles. She studied marketing in college, and in 1981, after two years in radio, she joined KMEX, a Los Angeles television station operated by the company that would later become Univision. Her keen insight into the issues that affected the Latino community in Southern California earned her credibility and paved her way to the top. In 1987, she broke new ground on multiple fronts when she was named anchor of the premiere Spanish-language network news program in the United States.
Throughout her career at Univision, Salinas has covered history in the making. She has interviewed dozens of world leaders, including every past U.S. president since Jimmy Carter, rebel leaders, celebrities and other newsmakers. She has traveled the world covering wars and elections, coups and human rights issues, natural disasters and human-interest stories. In addition to her role in news specials and the popular weekly news magazine “Aquí y Ahora,” Salinas has headlined programs on the issues that most affect the Latino community.
One of her most impactful stories was “Entre el abandono y el rechazo” (“Between Abandonment and Rejection”), a hard-hitting primetime special about the arrival of thousands of unaccompanied minors to the U.S. She crisscrossed Central America and the border, interviewing key figures in the crisis and walking the streets of poor and dangerous neighborhoods to find the roots of the exodus. The investigative piece became the first Spanish-language special to earn several of journalism’s top accolades, including the Peabody, Walter Cronkite, Emmy and Gracie awards.
In 2004, Salinas was a moderator of the first ever bilingual Democratic Party presidential debate and later co-hosted forums with candidates from both parties on Univision as well as a Democratic debate in 2016. Her community outreach work includes promoting civic participation among Hispanics by encouraging them to become citizens, register to vote and take part in the political process. She is a founding member of The National Association of Hispanic Journalists, through which she has awarded scholarships in her name to Latino journalism students. Salinas also is a member of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund board.

Salinas, la presentadora de noticias vespertinas de una cadena con más tiempo en el cargo en la historia de la televisión estadounidense, les contó a los televidentes al final del noticiero vespertino hoy sobre sus planes
NUEVA YORK –3 DE AGOSTO DE 2017– María Elena Salinas, una influyente voz en la televisión y entre los hispanos en los Estados Unidos durante más de tres décadas, anunció hoy que planea dejar el cargo de presentadora del Noticiero Univision a fin de año.
Salinas, hija de inmigrantes mexicanos, llegó a presentar el noticiero nacional de la Cadena Univision todas las tardes y hacer reportajes trascendentales sobre los hispanos en los Estados Unidos durante una larga y distinguida carrera. Su partida de Univision después de más de 35 años pondrá fin a una era que ha tenido un impacto imborrable en la televisión estadounidense y los hispanos en el país, para quienes escuchar su voz ecuánime, informada y empática es un ritual nocturno desde hace mucho tiempo. Salinas, ganadora de destacados premios periodísticos y descrita por The New York Times como la “voz de los hispanos en los Estados Unidos”, además es una de las conductoras del programa dominical “Aquí y Ahora” y presenta varios especiales que analizan a fondo temas de actualidad todos los años.
En enero, planea iniciar un nuevo capítulo, trabajando independientemente como periodista y productora, y continuando sus labores filantrópicas.

En los próximos meses, Univision anunciará los planes para el nuevo/a presentador/a que se sumará a Jorge Ramos para presentar nuestro principal noticiero, que generalmente alcanza los dos millones de televidentes, y los planes para el/la co-presentador/a que se unirá a Teresa Rodríguez en nuestro programa de noticias y entretenimiento semanal “Aquí y Ahora”.
Salinas fue incluida en el Salón de la Fama de National Association of Broadcasters en 2017 y pasará a ser parte del Salón de la Fama de Broadcasting & Cable el 17 de octubre de 2017. Entre los muchos galardones que ha recibido durante su carrera se encuentran siete premios Emmy, además del Broadcast Legend Award de Radio and Television News Association of Southern California y el Premio Humanitario Mickey Leland. Fue la primera latina que recibió el premio a la trayectoria profesional de The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Salinas nació y se crió en Los Ángeles. Realizó estudios de mercadeo en la universidad y en 1981, tras trabajar en radio dos años, se incorporó a KMEX, una estación de televisión en Los Ángeles bajo la dirección de la compañía que pasaría a ser Univision. Su profundo entendimiento de los asuntos que afectaban a la comunidad latina en el sur de California le dio gran credibilidad y preparó el terreno para que llegara a la cima. En 1987, derrumbó nuevas fronteras cuando fue nombrada presentadora del destacado noticiero en español en los Estados Unidos.
Durante toda su carrera en Univision, Salinas cubrió las noticias que hicieron historia. Entrevistó a decenas de líderes mundiales, entre ellos todos los presidentes pasados de los Estados Unidos desde Jimmy Carter, caudillos rebeldes, celebridades y otros protagonistas de las noticias. Ha recorrido el mundo cubriendo guerras y elecciones, golpes de estado y derechos humanos, catástrofes naturales y reportajes de fondo. Además de su papel en especiales noticiosos y el popular magacín semanal de noticias “Aquí y Ahora”, Salinas ha conducido programas sobre los temas de mayor trascendencia en la comunidad latina.
Uno de sus reportajes de mayor impacto fue “Entre el abandono y el rechazo”, un contundente especial en horario estelar sobre la llegada de miles de menores sin acompañantes a los Estados Unidos. Viajó por Centroamérica y la frontera entrevistando a los principales actores de la crisis y recorriendo vecindarios pobres y peligrosos para encontrar las causas del éxodo. El trabajo de investigación fue el primer especial en español que recibió varios destacados galardones periodísticos, entre ellos el premio Peabody, Walter Cronkite, Emmy y Gracie.
En 2004, Salinas fue moderadora del primer debate bilingüe entre candidatos a la presidencia del Partido Demócrata y posteriormente fue una de los conductores de foros con candidatos de ambos partidos en Univision, como también del debate demócrata de 2016. Su labor de extensión incluye promover la participación cívica por los hispanos, animándolos a hacerse ciudadanos, inscribirse para votar y participar en el proceso político. Es una de las fundadoras de la National Association of Hispanic Journalists, por medio de la cual ha otorgado becas que llevan su nombre a estudiantes latinos de periodismo. Salinas también es miembro de la junta del Hispanic Scholarship Fund.
