Univision News Joins Forces with NPR’s Radio Ambulante to Present “Firme Aquí,” a Gripping Podcast that Takes an In-Depth Look at the Onerous Bond System Used in U.S. Immigration Courts

MIAMI – MAY 1, 2018 – Univision News, the award-winning news division of Univision Communications Inc. (UCI), the leading media company serving Hispanic America, announces the debut of “Firme Aquí” (Sign Here), its first collaborative project with Radio Ambulante, the acclaimed Spanish-language podcast program distributed by NPR. “Firme Aquí” is now available on UnivisionNoticias.com and the Radio Ambulante website.
Produced by Radio Ambulante’s Silvia Viñas, with reporting by Univision News journalists Alejandro Fernandez and Inti Pacheco, the podcast takes an in-depth look at the bond system used in U.S. immigration courts and the problems it creates for detained undocumented immigrants facing deportation proceedings. Through testimonies of affected individuals and their families, “Firme Aquí” paints a grim and realistic picture of the onerous process detainees must go through to be released on bail—they must either pay a large sum of money in cash or hire a private bail-bond company that charges a percentage of the cost and usually requires full collateral, which many immigrants cannot provide. ICE detainees who are eligible for bail but are unable to meet the bond requirements can be imprisoned for an average of two to three years while their cases are decided by the immigration courts.
One of the private firms profiting from detained immigrants is Libre by Nexus, which acts as an intermediary between inmates and bail-bond companies. After conducting a thorough investigation of the company, the “Firme Aquí” podcast reveals details about its questionable methods and practices. Interviews with clients and former employees, in addition to immigration attorneys, raise concerns about the firm’s business model. In fact, Libre by Nexus is under federal investigation by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, as well as by the attorneys general of New York, Virginia, and the state of Washington.
During the production of “Firme Aquí,” the Univision News/Radio Ambulante team gathered 168 stories, interviewed dozens of people in New York, Baltimore and Miami, and attended numerous immigration court hearings to see how the bail-bond process works. Producido por Silvia Viñas, de Radio Ambulante, con reportajes de los periodistas de Univision Noticias Alejandro Fernández e Inti Pacheco, el podcast analiza a fondo el sistema de fianzas utilizado en las cortes de inmigración de Estados Unidos y los problemas que éste genera para inmigrantes indocumentados que han sido detenidos y enfrentan procesos de deportación. Mediante testimonios de individuos afectados y de sus familiares, “Firme Aquí” describe la dura realidad de los indocumentados que buscan ser puestos en libertad bajo fianza: deben pagar altas sumas de dinero en efectivo o contratar a una empresa privada de fianzas que cobra un porcentaje del monto y, además, generalmente exige alguna propiedad de garantía, lo cual muchos inmigrantes no pueden proporcionar. Los detenidos por el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas que tienen derecho a salir bajo fianza, pero les es imposible cumplir con los requisitos de la misma, pueden quedar encarcelados, en promedio, de dos a tres años mientras se resuelven sus procesos de deportación.
Una de las empresas privadas que se lucra de los inmigrantes indocumentados es Libre by Nexus, la cual funciona como intermediario entre los detenidos y las compañías de finanzas. Tras realizar una investigación exhaustiva de esa empresa, “Firme Aquí” revela los detalles de sus cuestionables métodos y prácticas. Entrevistas realizadas con clientes y antiguos empleados de Libre by Nexus, además de abogados de inmigración, generan inquietud acerca del modelo de negocios de la compañía. De hecho, Libre by Nexus está siendo investigada a nivel federal por el Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (Oficina de Protección Financiera del Consumidor), y también por los fiscales generales de los estados de Nueva York, Virginia y Washington.
