NEW YORK, NY – SEPTEMBER 5, 2017 – I am disappointed, to say the least, in today’s announcement by the Administration to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in six months.
The U.S. government is revoking the ability of roughly 800,000 DREAMers to continue to work and contribute in countless ways to the United States – the only home they have ever known. This is a failure to live up to a commitment already made to DREAMers and is contrary to America’s values and traditions.
As parents are sending their kids back to college, thousands of DREAMer students pursuing college degrees are trying to focus on learning, not knowing if they will be able to complete their studies. As the government sends more troops to Afghanistan, DREAMer soldiers will be deployed to fight on the front lines, knowing that the freedoms they are protecting may not be afforded to them when they return home. As employers work to build the U.S. economy, DREAMer employees who are paying taxes and contributing to the future of our nation face uncertainty of their own economic futures.
Let’s be very clear – DREAMers are our students, soldiers, first responders, coworkers, neighbors, and friends. Here at UCI we will continue to stand by them, including those talented DREAMers working at our company to advance our mission of entertaining, informing, and empowering the Hispanic community and the rising American mainstream we serve. Their stories are unmistakably American. They deserve better than this.
That is why today’s announcement should not be seen by those who espouse anti-immigrant sentiments as a “win” or a way to send hundreds of thousands of immigrants back into the shadows. We must not allow this move to foster ethnic discrimination in our neighborhoods, schools and workplaces.
Instead, this is a call to Congress to fix this mess before the United States experiences the estimated $280 to $460 billion reduction in economic growth from the loss of DREAMers in our workforce, as estimated by some studies. This is a call for Congress to work in a bipartisan fashion to enact meaningful immigration reform that takes into account those who were brought here as children and are raising their hands to learn, to serve, and to work should be allowed to legally remain in the U.S.
The American values of hard work and commitment have led millions of immigrants to the United States in search of opportunity. These values are embodied by DREAMers. It is time to permanently protect the DACA program.

NUEVA YORK – 5 DE SEPTIEMBRE DE 2017 – Me decepciona, como mínimo, el anuncio de hoy del gobierno en el que anuncia que se pondrá fin en seis meses al programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals o DACA).
El gobierno de Estados Unidos está revocando la capacidad de que aproximadamente 800,000 “DREAMers” sigan trabajando y contribuyendo de maneras innumerables a Estados Unidos, el único hogar que jamás han conocido. Esto es un fracaso para cumplir con un compromiso ya establecido con DREAMers y es contrario a los valores y a las tradiciones de Estados Unidos.
Ahora que los padres vuelven a enviar a sus hijos a la universidad, miles de estudiantes DREAMers tratan de concentrarse en aprender, sin saber si podrán concluir sus estudios. Ahora que el gobierno envía más tropas a Afganistán, se desplegará a soldados DREAMers a luchar en el frente, sabiendo que las libertades que están protegiendo es posible que no se le otorgue a ellos una vez que regresen a sus hogares. Ahora que los empleadores vuelven a recibir a sus empleados tras un fin de semana largo, los empleados DREAMers que pagan impuestos y contribuyen al futuro de nuestra nación, se enfrentan con incertidumbre sobre sus propios futuros económicos.
Seamos claros: DREAMers son nuestros estudiantes, soldados, socorristas, compañeros de trabajo, vecinos y amigos. Aquí en UCI, seguiremos apoyándolos, incluyendo a los DREAMers de talento que trabajan en nuestra compañía para cumplir con nuestra misión de entretener, informar y empoderar a la comunidad hispana y la emergente corriente general de Estados Unidos a la que prestamos servicios. Sus historias son inconfundiblemente estadounidenses. Merecen algo mejor.
Por eso el anuncio de hoy no debe considerarse como una victoria por quienes tienen mala opinión de los inmigrantes ni considerarse una manera de hacer que miles de inmigrantes vuelvan a vivir en clandestinidad. No podemos permitir que esta medida promueva la discriminación étnica en nuestros vecindarios, escuelas ni centros de trabajo.
Más bien, este es un llamamiento para que el Congreso solucione este problema antes de que en Estados Unidos se reduzca de $280,000 millones a $460,000 millones el crecimiento económico debido a la pérdida de los DREAMers en nuestra fuerza laboral, según se calcula en ciertos estudios. Este es un llamamiento para que el Congreso trabaje de manera bipartidista para promulgar una reforma significativa que reconozca que se les debe permitir permanecer legalmente en Estados Unidos a quienes fueron traídos aquí de niños y demuestran su deseo de aprender, prestar servicios y trabajar.
Los valores estadounidenses de trabajo arduo y dedicación han llevado a millones de inmigrantes a Estados Unidos en busca de oportunidades. Los DREAMers encarnan estos valores. Es hora de proteger el programa DACA de manera permanente.
