Luis Fernández

President, Entertainment and UVN Studios

Luis Fernández serves as president of Entertainment and Univision Studios for Univision Communications Inc, the leading media company serving Hispanic America. He oversees entertainment programming, promotions and talent relations for Univision Network as well as the production and co-production of reality shows, dramatic series and other programming formats for Univision Studios.

Mr. Fernández has more than 30 years of experience in the television, film and radio industries.  Prior to joining Univision, Mr. Fernández served as executive president of Corporación Radio Televisión Española (RTVE) and its Board of Directors.  In this capacity, Mr. Fernández oversaw all operations of the company, including the television, radio, and online divisions. He is responsible for increasing the ranking of TVE-1 from being the third ranked television station to being the most watched channel in Spain, dramatically increasing site visits to RTVE’s website and revitalizing the company.

Prior to his role at RTVE, Mr. Fernández was managing director of production company Promofilm U.S., a Grupo IMAGINA company with offices and studios in Miami and Los Angeles.  Between 2000 and 2005, he was the general manager of Plural Entertainment, the television and film production arm of Grupo Prisa, based in the United States. During his time at Plural Entertainment, he was executive producer for “Al Filo de la Ley” (At The Edge of the Law), the first fiction series to air on Univision in primetime in 2005.  In addition, he also was the executive producer of several feature films, among them “Un Día Sin Mexicanos” (A Day Without a Mexican), co-produced with Televisa, which broke box-office records in Mexico, and “Caminantes,” which was recognized at the Festival de La Habana.

Prior to his time in audiovisual production, Mr. Fernández served as director of the news department for Canal +, where he moderated the only televised one-on-one debate of  the 1996 general elections between the then Vice President of the Spanish government, Pedro Solbes, and the man who succeeded him, Rodrigo Rato. That year he was named director of the news department for Telecinco and deputy general manager of the network. During his four-year tenure, Telecinco undertook a major rebranding effort for the network and its newscasts, adopting state-of-the art technology and establishing Telecinco as Spain’s most prestigious and independent news provider.

Before his television career, Mr. Fernández worked in the radio industry for nearly 19 years. He served as director of the news department and national news chief for Cadena SER, Spain’s leading radio network.  Prior to that position, he served as news chief for Radio EL PAIS.  Mr. Fernández began his career at the COPE Network, where he was news chief for seven years.

Mr. Fernández holds a degree in journalism from Complutense University in Madrid.
