Pepe Aguilar Gives Stellar and Historic Performance at Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles
Regional Mexican Music Icon Becomes First International Latin Star to Headline at Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Academy Awards® Venue
Woodland Hills, CA -- Pepe Aguilar, the undisputable regional Mexican music idol, successfully kicked off his U.S. Tour at the world-famous Kodak Theatre in the City of Los Angeles this past weekend. Aguilar performed to a full house for three consecutive nights, making him the first international Latin artist to headline at the permanent home of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Academy Awards®.
At the strike of the first note played by the Zacatecano Mariachi band and before Aguilar appeared on stage, the audience’s display of affection and loyalty was evidenced by the myriad applauses and immediate commotion that invaded the venue with heartfelt anticipation. The pleasant reaction of the more than 3,000 spectators present was immediate when Aguilar appeared raised by a platform at the top of the stage, where he was able to witness the standing ovation of thousands of screaming fans that attended this historic first-ever Spanish language concert held at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California.
Aguilar’s innate charisma, sense of humor and talent were undoubtedly transmitted throughout the performance, which lasted approximately two hours. During his performance he made a musical journey that covered everything from his past repertoire like “Por mujeres como tú” (Because of Women Like You), “Por una mujer bonita” (For a Beautiful Woman) and “Este terco corazón” (This Stubborn Heart), as well as a poignant tribute to the great Mexican legend José Alfredo Jiménez, which he began with the internationally acclaimed “El rey” (The King), chorused automatically and entirely by more than 3,000 voices in the audience.
But a Pepe Aguilar concert would be incomplete without the very well deserved homage he pays in every show to his legendary father Antonio Aguilar, whom he described as his best teacher, biggest idol, and main source of inspiration in his career and personal life. Some of his father’s most memorable songs performed by Pepe in this show were “De qué te quejas mujer” (What Are You Complaining About Woman) and “Mi gusto es” (It’s My Choice). And just when the full house at the Kodak Theatre thought the show had ended, Latin Grammyâ-nominated Banda Centenario made its appearance on stage and with its brassy sound had the entire theater crowd on its feet asking for more the moment they saw Aguilar making his way from the back and singing the traditional staple banda music songs.
For three consecutive and nearly sold-out nights, Pepe Aguilar not only pleased his ‘ranchero’ music fans in Los Angeles but also proved that regional Mexican music can be played and deserves to have a presence in the world’s finest and most prestigious venues. This event made him the first international Latin artist to headline at the theater with Spanish music.
“I’m extremely proud to be the first artist to perform in Spanish at this amazing venue,” stated an emotional and satisfied Aguilar while the audience gave him yet another standing ovation reconfirming their affection and loyalty. Following his last concert at the Kodak Theatre, Aguilar expressed his deepest gratitude to the City of Los Angeles and said farewell with the characteristic smile and personality that have made him a true international music icon.
Before leaving the stage, Aguilar officially announced that he had accepted to participate as this year’s honored guest for the Mexican Independence festivities sponsored by the City of Los Angeles and KMEX, Channel 34 on September 15 at the Civic Center. Said event will air live nationally on the Univision Network.
Recently, Pepe Aguilar received an RIAA certified Latin Platinum Album for the extraordinary unit sales in excess of 200,000 of his Univision Records’ debut “Y Tenerte Otra Vez” (To Have You Again).
