Univision Records Presents Jae-P, a New Type of Urban Regional Poet

19 Year-Old New Artist Awakens Social Consciousness in Debut Album

Woodland Hills, CA -- Following the momentum picked up by the Urban Regional movement, Univision Records released today “Ni de aquí ni de allá” (Neither From Here Nor There), Jae-P’s debut album.

“Ni de aquí, ni de allá”(Neither From Here Nor There) marks what very well may be the most important chapter in this young man’s life.  It’s an album full of contemporary poetry underscored by urban African-American hip-hop beats with a fresh splash of Latin rhythms.  Inspired by Kid Frost, Little Rob and Night Owl’s Chicano Rap, Jae-P is Urban Regional, not so much because of the fusion of rhythms but because of the blending of bilingual colloquialisms.  In his album he shifts freely and effortlessly between English and Spanish in the same manner a dolphin breathes in two completely incongruous environments.

The first promotional cut “Ni de aquí, ni de allá,” also the title of the album, is a track that serves as the basic and primary foundation of this musical production.  It’s a song that revolves around the innate immigrant feeling of not belonging, of not being a part of, and of not being accepted by the adopted country or the country left behind.  “Ni de aquí, ni de allá” is without a doubt the common thread that weaves together the eleven heartfelt tracks that comprise this unique collection of urban “corridos.”

“Ni De Aquí Ni De Allá,” features nine new tracks produced by Byron Brizuela of Brizz Productions. This “enhanced CD” also features three bonus tracks and the music video for “Ni De Aquí Ni De Allá” directed by Estevan Oriol. The album touches upon some of our community’s most delicate social fibers like the topic of family disintegration in tracks like “Un Padre No Es”(A Real Father Is) and “Perdóname Amá”(Forgive Me Mom), a theme that he also disperses throughout the album in interludes, such as “¿Apá Me Puedes Ayudar?” (Dad, Can You Help Me?).

“The things I rap about are about my life and I’m sure that the life I lead or that I talk about in my songs is representative of the experiences of many people.  In other words, I don’t just talk about me but also about other people’s lives.  There are many people who’d like to say what I’m saying, so a lot of them relate to my music; they feel it,” said Jae-P.

However, Jae-P does not limit himself to exposing family problems and deficiencies, he also makes an open criticism of our society and raises community awareness in “Soldado Sin Querer” (A Soldier By Accident), a soft ‘bolero’ based Hip-Hop track where he pays homage to thousands of young Latinos who join the armed forces to escape poverty and to obtain a higher education and U.S. citizenship at the expense of U.S. government political interests.  In “Decir Que Tu No Eres” (Denying Who You Are) Jae-P reminds Latinos who suffer of cultural amnesia of their roots and their origins, and the historic riches found in America’s indigenous ancestors.

Jae-P, like most Latino youth brought up in the U.S., identified with his predominantly Hispanic surroundings.  He listened to Regional Mexican musicians such as Ramón Ayala, Chalino Sánchez, Vicente Fernández, Los Tigres del Norte and Javier Solís. At the same time, Jae-P became attached to the irreverent lyrical content and infectious rhythms of African-American Rap music.  His passion for the two music styles undoubtedly laid the foundation for his own unique form of musical expression.

The album goes on sale at retail stores nationwide on Tuesday, September 9th, 2003
