KTVW Univision 33 Launches Informative Campaign in Preparation for the Upcoming Flu Season

“Mano a Mano” Aims to Heighten Health Awareness to Prevent the Transmission of the H1N1 Flu Virus (Swine Flu)

Phoenix, AZ -- KTVW Univision 33 is proud to announce the launch of “Mano a Mano” (Hand by Hand), a new campaign designed to offer information on ways to avoid the H1N1 flu virus, also known as swine flu, in partnership with Maricopa County Department of Public Health and the children’s broadcast Vamos News.

KTVW Univision 33’s “Mano a Mano” campaign is taking a proactive approach to educate the Hispanic community of Arizona about measures that can help fight the H1N1 in Phoenix, and what to do if the virus develops into a pandemic. The campaign follows a comprehensive three-phase plan:

• Phase 1 (September 2009 to October 2009): Promoting the vaccine against regular flu among school kids and risk groups, and free immunization events.

• Phase 2 (September 2009 through March 2010): Educating viewers on daily habits that will prevent the spread of the virus.

• Phase 3 (November 2009 through December 2009): Promoting the two-step immunization campaign against the H1N1 virus when the vaccine is released by authorities.

Some groups are considered to be at high risk for developing severe complications associated with the H1N1 virus such as pregnant women, those with health conditions like asthma or diabetes, those with neurological problems and young children. In order to prevent a wide spread of this disease among these high-risk groups, as well as others, KTVW Univision 33 will create a series of informative vignettes on the importance of getting both the H1N1 vaccine (anticipated to be available this fall), as well as the regular seasonal flu vaccine, which is currently available at doctors’ offices and clinics.

“Mano a Mano” also aims to inform and educate parents and children about the importance of personal hygiene when trying to prevent disease outbreaks, the importance of vaccination as a tool of self-defense and will also take a look at the importance of economic planning during outbreaks such as this one where there will likely be high rates of illness.

The campaign will consist of special news reports, informative vignettes, promotional spots and public service announcements, all leading up to a special 30-minute program that will investigate more in-depth this new phenomenon, and what the public should do to protect themselves and their loved ones.
