Gotham’s 311 Call Center Unveiled in ‘Noticias Univision 41’ Exclusive
New York, NY -- New York’s new 311 call center is unveiled to TV viewers for the first time in a live report to be seen exclusively on the 6 pm edition of “Noticias Univision 41,” the newscast of Univision 41 (WXTV), Gotham’s premier Spanish-language TV station. “Marque El 311 Con El 41 A Tu Lado” (Dial 311), the week-long report by correspondent Berenice Gartner will be seen Monday, March 28, through Friday, April 1, 2005.
The administration of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg set up the 311 call center to accomplish two important goals: To enhance public convenience by creating a central number for people to call regarding city conditions that are not emergencies, such as sanitation or snow removal, and to take the load off the emergency 911 line caused by non-emergency phone calls so that genuine emergencies may be handled more quickly. Univision 41 is the first TV station to send live cameras into the 311 call center, which is manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“In TV we call this ‘service news,’” says Univision 41’s Gartner. “In this case it could not be more accurate, since the 311 call center is a significant new city service. The fact that a Spanish-language TV station is the first to report from the call center says a lot about the importance of city government reaching out to the growing Hispanic community here to ensure that all people understand how to use public services.”
The 311 line is answered in Spanish as well as English. It is estimated, based on 2000 US Census data, that more than 27 percent of the population of the five boroughs of New York City are Hispanic. In an even greater bow to New York’s ethnic diversity, the 311 call center is equipped to provide immediate translation in up to 170 languages.
In addition to TV’s first look inside New York’s 311 call center, “Marque El 311 Con El 41 A Tu Lado” will feature interviews with city agency commissioners who direct the services handled by the call center. They will explain how the center works and when people should and should not call 311.
