Univision 45 and Ford Division Sponsor “Todos a Leer” Event, Featuring a Special Day of Reading at Brookline Elementary School

Houston, TX -- Continuing with our commitment to reading awareness and academic success, Univision 45 and Ford Division will present the next “Todos a Leer” (Let’s All Read) on Friday, October 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Brookline Elementary School, 6301 South Loop East, Houston. As previous “Todos a Leer” events, this presentation will include a variety of components to promote and educate parents and students on the importance of reading.

As part of the program, Univision 45 on-air personalities, community leaders, education professionals, and local authors will read books aloud to students from 3rd to 5th grade, followed by a discussion on the book’s content.  Some of the guest readers that will participate in the reading session are Beatriz De Alvarado, “Noticias 45” news anchor, and Felipe Valenzuela, “Noticias 45” sports anchor.  In addition, Ernesto Quiñonez, author of “Chango’s Fire” and “Bodega Dreams” (special guest directly from New York), Tony Díaz, author of “The Aztec Love God” and founder/director of Nuestra Palabra and Neo Cantu, author of “Destiny Foretold” have also confirmed their participation.  Other honored guests that will attend are: Rose Ann Blanco, director of LULAC-National Educational Services Center, Silvia Nadal and Silvia Olivero, from the Mexican Institute, and several HISD representatives.

While the students are being read to, parents will participate in a workshop that will stress the importance of reading. They will learn about reading techniques, resources, and parental leadership.  The presenters of the parents’ workshop are: Elizabeth Celeste Humphries, Title III Supervisor/HISD, Patricia Cabrera, Parent Engagement Dept./HISD, and Sandra Fernandez, Houston Public Library.

Ford Division will donate a computer valued at $500 and will also provide book covers to every student who participates in the program.  Scholastics will distribute free books to approximately 500 children, and the school will also get a chance to participate in developing an original poster that will compete with other schools at the national level. A winner will be selected and the winning poster will be featured as the official national book cover for “Todos A Leer” in 2005. The winning school will be awarded $500 in cash.

This reading initiative takes place twice a year in cities across the United States.  In Houston, the “Todos a Leer” program has taken place at the following schools: Lamar, Cunningham, Sylvan Rodriguez, De Zavala, Sanchez Elementary, and Jaime Dávila. Our goal is to promote the importance of reading, one school at a time.
