Washington, DC — Univision Communications Inc. (NYSE: UVN), the leading Spanish-language media company in the United States, today announced the official launch of its integrated cross-platform health education initiative “Salud es Vida…¡Entérate!”.  The mission of this initiative is to promote healthy lifestyles and encourage the early detection and aggressive management of chronic health conditions affecting U.S. Hispanics.

¡Entérate! was officially announced today at a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. A bipartisan group of Members of Congress joined Univision and its partners in the launch of “Salud es Vida…¡Entérate!”.  Speakers at the news conference included Henry Bonilla (R-23rd TX); Ciro Rodríguez (D-28th TX); Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-18th FL) and Hilda L. Solis (D-32nd CA).   Matt James, Senior Vice President of Media and Public Education at the Kaiser Family Foundation also participated at the unveiling of the public service announcements. The master of ceremonies was Teresa Rodriguez, host of the Univision News program “Aquí y Ahora.”

This comprehensive corporate initiative is a call-to-action designed to raise awareness, increase knowledge and encourage positive health decision-making.  “¡Entérate!” will leverage Univision’s diverse media assets to educate its audience on health issues and promote primary prevention, habits of healthy living, access to care and disease specific prevention and treatment.  Key health issues to be addressed include: asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, sexual health issues –including HIV/AIDS and other STDs– immunization, prenatal care/infant mortality, tobacco cessation, obesity, physical activity, and nutrition.

Univision, in partnership with community, health and physician organizations, will provide informational media messages and programming via PSAs, vignettes, news and dedicated health programs featuring nationally recognized Hispanic celebrities, medical experts as well as testimonials. Univision Radio will launch a weekly hour-long radio program on health issues hosted by Dr. Aliza Lifshitz. To complement this effort, Univision.com has developed the most comprehensive Spanish language health related website in the U.S.  By providing risk assessment surveys, interactive guides and link to health organizations it will become a critical resource for Hispanics.

“¡Entérate! reflects our commitment and dedication to the health of our community and to educating our audience,” said Ivelisse Estrada, Vice President of Corporate and Community Relations, Univision Communications Inc. “It has become widely recognized that Hispanics face significant and dangerous barriers in access to information about health and healthcare services, and Univision is in a unique position to help correct this anomaly. We are proud to become a vital source for consistent, valuable and comprehensive information about health and healthcare for our audiences.  We are indebted to our partners for their assistance in our community outreach efforts.”

Univision’s relationship with the Kaiser Family Foundation began with an awareness campaign on sexual health targeting young Latinos. This opportunity created the foundation for “Salud Es Vida… ¡Enterate!”

“Since 2001, Univision has shown great commitment to raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and STDs through our on-going partnership ¡Entérate!/¡Protégete!,” said Matt James, Senior Vice President, Kaiser Family Foundation, Univision’s lead partner on the ¡Entérate! campaign.  “Our studies have shown that Hispanics get a significant amount of health information from the media, including 54 percent who say they get their health information through television. Therefore, we’re confident that Univision’s expanded Health Initiative will reach millions of Hispanics, helping them to increase access to care and be better informed about critical health issues.”

In addition to the Kaiser Family Foundation, Univision’s partners for this campaign include: AD Council, American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, American Liver Foundation, American Lung Association, Hispanic Federation, Interamerican College of Physicians & Surgeons Inc., March of Dimes, Mental Health Media Partnership, National Alliance for Hispanic Health, National Association of Hispanic Nurses, National Cancer Institute, National Council of La Raza, National Hispanic Medical Association, National Latino Council on Alcohol & Tobacco Prevention, National Pharmaceutical Council, National Puerto Rican Coalition, PhRMA, SER de Puerto Rico (Easter Seals), and The Nation’s Voice on Mental Illness
