Miami, FL — In an exclusive live interview yesterday with Raul de Molina, co-host of Univision Network’s “El Gordo y La Flaca” (Chubby and Skinny), Laura Zapata revealed horrifying details about her and her sister Ernestina Sodi’s kidnapping late last year. Zapata is better known as the sister of famous Mexican singer/actress, Thalia, who is married to top music executive Tommy Mottola.
Zapata joined “El Gordo y La Flaca” for her first live television appearance after a press conference held early yesterday in Mexico City. In this candid and emotionally charged interview, Zapata revealed never shared before information. She did however verify that neither she nor her sister was physically mistreated.
Zapata revealed for the first time that the captors used her and her sister in order to target Mottola’s money and that the initial ransom request was in the amount of $5 million. She did disclose however that the final ransom was negotiated at a much lesser amount. She also confirmed that Thalia spoke to the kidnappers on several occasions and played a critical role in paying off a substantial part of the ransom. In the interview, Zapata told de Molina that the ransom paid to the captors comprised of all of her family’s savings.
For now, Zapata will focus less on her acting career and try running for office in the Mexican national party, Partido Acción Nacional (National Action Party), in order to influence existing laws in her country.
Despite the emotional turmoil she experienced throughout the uncertain days of her abduction, she is overcoming her fears with the help of yoga, psychotherapy, antidepressants and prayers. When asked if she forgave her captors, she simply stated, “I will leave forgiveness up to God.” To date, there is no information on her captors or their whereabouts.
“El Gordo y La Flaca” is an entertainment program that has proved its success by interviewing famous stars and covering their lives and careers. Zapata was the program’s first guest 5 years ago and is considered an honorary guest host. ‘El Gordo y La Flaca’ airs Monday through Friday, 4 pm to 5 pm ET/PT (3 pm to 4 pm Central/Mountain Time).
Univision Network’s “Aqui y Ahora” (Here and Now) will also air special coverage regarding Laura Zapata and her kidnapping tonight from 10 pm to 11 pm ET/PT (9 pm to 10 pm Central/Mountain Time).
