Spanish-language Univision 41 Sole Gotham TV Station to See Ratings Jump in Every Key Weekday News Time Period, Feb. 2002 vs. Year Earlier

New York, NY — Propelled by a 40% jump in total viewership in the past year, Spanish-language Univision 41 (WXTV) here is the only New York TV station that can boast audience growth in every key weekday news time period according to a comparison of Nielsen Station Index (NSI) household ratings for the February 2002 and February 2001 sweeps periods.  Sweeps are the four, four-week periods each year in which the audiences of local TV stations nationwide are measured in order to set advertising rates.  The February 2002 sweep took place from January 31 to February 27, 2002.  The February 2001 sweep lasted from February 1 to 28, 2001.

Sign-on to sign-off viewership (the broadest measure of a TV station’s audience) of Univision 41 is up 40% for February 2002 compared to February 2001.  Univision 41 emerged from the February 2002 sweep with a 2.1 average NSI rating and 5 share, 40 percent up from the 1.5/3 NSI it scored in February 2001.

Each of the key weekday news programs on Univision 41 soared in viewership for February 2002 compared to February 2001 levels:

“Noticias 41 al Despertar” averaged 1.1/5 from 6 am to 7 am, a jump of 83% over the 0.6/3 it scored in February 2001.
“Despierta America,” 7 am to 10 am, averaged 1.7/5 NSI, a 113% increase over its 0.8/3 of February 2002.
Newsmagazine “Primer Impacto” (4 pm to 5 pm) scored 2.9/ NSI, up 53% from 1.9/4 in February 2001.
Signature local newscast “Noticias 41” with anchors Rafael Pineda and Denisse Oller, seen 6 pm to 6:30 pm, scored 3.3/6, up 50% from the 2.2/4 it scored last February.
Univision Network newscast “Noticiero Univision” seen locally from 6:30 pm to 7 pm with anchors Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas, scored 3.3/6 NSI in New York, up 43% from last February’s 2.3/4.
The late edition of “Noticias 41” seen from 11 pm to 11:30 pm scored 3.5/6 NSI, up 59% from 2.2/4 in February 2001.

Each New York Nielsen Station Index rating point represents 73,010.6 TV households.
